Where can I place a skip?
The best place to put your skip is on a driveway. This way, you won’t need a permit, which will help to reduce the cost of your skip hire. This will also make it easier to load your skip.
If you need to leave your skip on a public property like a sidewalk or a road outside your property you must get a permit from your local council. We can do this for you.
IMPORTANT – We suggest there to be a 9-10 feet width on the entrance to a driveway this will allow the lorry to get in. Although, it can be possible for the skip to be dropped onto the driveway from just the entrance of your property.
How wide does our driveway or property entrance need to be?
We suggest there to be a 9-10 feet width on the entrance to a driveway this will allow the lorry to get in. Although, it can be possible for the skip to be dropped onto the driveway from just the entrance of your property.
How long can I keep the skip for?
Need a Skip offers skip hire periods up to 14 days with no extra charges, although if you need to extend we can offer week-long extensions for an added fee.
Can I place a skip on the road?
Yes, you can place a skip on the road, but this will require a skip permit. If you choose this option, we can arrange the permit for you when you select our “on-road” placement during checkout.
Please note, there’s an additional fee for this permit, and the local council can reject the application without offering a refund. A permit usually takes 7 days to arrive, we will keep you updated on the progress. As a skip permit expires, we must make sure your skip has been removed by this date.
Alternatively, you can opt for a wait and load service. This allows the skip to be placed on the road, and you’ll have 30 minutes to load it before it’s taken away, all without needing a permit. To try this option drop us an email or give us a call.
How high can you fill a skip?
The skip must only be filled to the top level of the skip and there should be nothing coming out of this line. You should not build up the sides with boards to put in more waste.
Not following this will likely result in a wasted journey fee upon collection and will not be picked up until the excess waste is removed.
A load must be able to be safely transported on public roads, so it is crucial the skip is not overloaded.
Do I need to be there for skip delivery or collection?
It depends on the skip company’s policy. Some may require someone on-site to sign paperwork and review what can and can’t go in the skip. Whilst it is a good idea to be there, If you can’t be there, follow these steps:
What to do if you can’t be there:
- Choose a Location: Inform us where you want the skip placed and send photos if needed.
- Check Space: Ensure there’s enough room for the skip size. If not, consider a smaller one.
- Clear Access: Make sure the driveway has 3 meters of clearance and isn’t blocked by vehicles.
- Overhead Obstacles: Ensure no wires or trees could interfere with delivery.
- Stay Available by Phone: Keep your phone on hand in case the driver needs help with directions.
Placing a skip on the road
If you plan to have the skip placed on a public road, here’s what you need to know:
- Skip Permit: You’ll need a permit from the local council, which can take up to 7 days to process. There is also an additional fee for this.
- Safe Placement: The skip must be positioned in a way that doesn’t block pedestrian paths or drop curbs.
- Reserved Spot: You can request a specific spot for the skip, but a parked car can block the area. You’ll need to park your car there if you want to save the spot.
- Challenges When You’re Not Present: If you’re not around, it may be tricky for the driver to place the skip exactly where you want it.
Can I put soil in a skip?
Small amounts of soil can be accepted. But, soil is very heavy so it can exceed weight limits. Overfilling these skips with soil can lead to a much higher disposal cost or a failed collection fee, so avoid overfilling them.
Are there any extra costs?
While there can be additional charges with skip hire, careful planning can help avoid them. Here are the extra charges that can occur:
- Skip Permits and Suspensions: If your skip needs to be placed on a public road, you will be required to get a skip permit, and possibly a parking suspension. These will come with extra fees, and we can help you in arranging them.
- Failed Deliveries or Collections: If a delivery or collection fails due to issues on your end (for example:, poor access or blockages), it may result in extra charges since the lorry will have already been dispatched. Please ensure the site is ready for both drop-off and pick-up (refer to our delivery guidelines).
- Overfilling: Overfilling your skip could lead to extra charges or a failed collection. For safety reasons, the skip must not be overloaded, as it’s a legal requirement that the load is safe to transport.
- Prohibited Items: Certain items like hazardous waste (e.g., fridges, TVs, paint) are not allowed in skips. If any prohibited items are found, they may incur significant additional fees. Please check our guidelines on what can and can’t be disposed of in a skip.
What are parking suspensions?
If you live in a permit parking area or plan to place the skip in a Pay and Display space, you will need both a skip permit and also a parking suspension. The suspension is charged daily, as the council must put up a notice to reserve this space. If the space is blocked when we attempt delivery, a wasted journey charge can apply. It’s very important to ensure the space is clear and large enough for the skip and lorry to fit.
What information do I need to provide for my delivery?
To ensure a smooth delivery for your skip, the more details you can provide, the better. At a minimum, we will need to know where the skip will be placed, the available access, and the best person to contact in case of any issues.
Can you place it behind a wall or car?
We must have clear access to the delivery location as we can not lift over any large obstacles or cars.
